Q. What are tegata and how are they made?
Tegata are the sumo equivalent of an autograph but with the addition of the wrestlers handprint.
Q. What is the difference between an authentic and replica tegata?
Authentic tegata use the wrestler’s actual inked palm on a 27 cm × 24 cm shikishi card, followed by the wrestler’s hand-done calligraphy, so each piece is unique due to variations in ink load, hand position, pressure, and transfer, with visible texture and often a personal seal. Replicas use the same size card but are machine printed from an image of an original, so surfaces are flat, details repeat exactly across copies, they are not unique, and they typically do not include rank seals such as the red ōzeki or yokozuna stamps.
Replicas are a great souvenir as they look close to the original whereas authentic are collectible one offs that the wrestler has produced themselves.
